Why did silent film stars wear black lipstick?

To get better contrast...They wore the heavy white makeup so to see the lips better you need a strong contrast. Why did silent film stars wear black lipstick?
to accentuate their lips! Why did silent film stars wear black lipstick?
Does it really matter what color is the lipstick? You can't tell the color anyway.
To make the film more dramatic and because it was black and white it was the only color that really showed.
well, since their were no voice overs, people would develop a skill of reading lips. and with black lipstick was easier to see the lips form the next word for the anxious movie go-er.
uhm ok it was in black and white so yeah I'm gonna leave this one up to you but all the clues are there
Because red didn't translate as red on the black %26amp; white film...it looked muddy and brownish.
they're mad freaky goths!

Film then had a very low resolution, high grain and most importantly required strong lighting which would wash out the fine features of faces.%26gt;%26gt; Notice also the heavy eye liner on Keaton, Chaplin, Fairbanks and everyone else.
it made them look awesome-er......
